Prohibited signs


As referenced in the Douglas County Zoning Code, here are some examples of prohibited signs include, but not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Portable signs not permanently affixed to a structure or mounted to the ground.
  • Signs in the public right-of-way or on public property.
  • Signs mounted, attached or painted on motor vehicles, trailers or boats when used as additional advertising signs.
  • Any sign emitting sound, revolving beacons, flashing signs, animation or intermittent lighting effects.
  • Flags, banners or other devices designed or allowed to wave or flap in the wind, except for flags of any government or its agencies or any civic, charitable, religious or fraternal organization, except small company flags or banners during grand opening events for a 2-week period.
  • Roof-mounted signs, or signs which project above the highest point of the roof line or fascia of the building.
  • Signs located so as to conflict with the clear and obvious appearance of public devices controlling public traffic.
  • Signs identifying a home occupation.

Enforcement Procedures

  1. Any prohibited sign which is observed by City staff or a result of a citizen complaint shall be confiscated and stored for 10 days at the city Community Development office, located at 7437 Village Square Lane, 2nd Floor Castle Pines, CO 80108. Owners of signs can pickup their sign within the 10 day period from City offices. If the sign is not picked up within the 10 day period the confiscated sign will be disposed of.
  2. City staff will educate the public and businesses regarding prohibited sigh use, and how they can adhere to the sign ordinance.
